Key to Success #1 – Use Lean Ground Beef

When making chili with ground beef, it’s important to use lean ground beef so that your chili won’t be greasy.

I prefer to use at least 93% lean ground beef in my chili.

You’ll want to brown your ground beef in a skillet on the stove top.

I like to use my cast iron skillet when I’m browning ground beef.

Use high heat on the stove and chop it up using a wooden paddle or a wooden spoon.

After your ground beef is browned, drain it well then put the meat into your slow cooker.

Key to Success #2 – Don’t Drain The Tomatoes or Beans

After you put the meat into your Crock Pot, you’ll want to add in all the other ingredients.

Chop the onion then add it to the slow cooker.

Just a note about the onion – you can brown the chopped onion along with the ground beef if you’d prefer but it’s not really necessary.

The onion will cook and soften while it’s in the slow cooker.

Next, add in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and chili beans.

Just go ahead and pour in all the contents of the cans. Do not drain.

Last, add in your seasonings.

Key to Success #3 – Spice Things Up

In addition to the spices in the chili beans, we’re adding in chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper.

I like my chili to be flavorful but not hot but you can add more spices to your liking.

If you like things hot, you can add additional chili powder, jalapenos, Tabasco, or other spices.

You can also add an extra can of chili beans if you like your chili with more beans.

How do you like your chili?

You can serve this chili in a bowl with a little cheese and maybe some sour cream.

Or you can add in some mustard to your bowl of chili.

This Slow Cooker Chili is great in Frito Chili Pies or on Chili Dogs.

Any way you serve it, you really can’t go wrong.
