A mug cake is a quick and easy dessert that is perfect for one or two people.
I would say it’s definitely more of a two-person dessert.
You could probably eat the whole thing if you were really hungry but it is perfect for splitting between two people.

Key to Success #1 – Pick The Right Mug
For this chocolate cake in a mug, you’ll need a large-ish coffee mug.
The coffee mug that I used was 16 ounces and there was plenty of room left at the top after my mug cake rose in the microwave.
You could use a coffee mug that is a bit smaller than this and it should be fine.
Be sure to grab a microwave-safe mug for this recipe!
Some mugs may be made of metal or have metallic accents that cannot be put into the microwave.
I highly recommend mixing up your cake batter in a separate bowl and then pouring it into your mug.
Using a separate bowl for mixing will ensure that your mug is kept clean and you don’t have little bits around the edge that do not get cooked properly.

Key to Success #2 – Mix Up The Cake Batter
It’s super easy to mix up this cake batter.
Like I said, you will want to use a separate bowl to mix the batter in order to keep things clean.
Use a spoon to stir together all the ingredients except the caramels.
You don’t have to do anything fancy with the batter.
It should come together really easily.
Pour the prepared cake batter into the microwave-safe mug.

Key to Success #3 – Drop in the Caramels
Use a sharp knife to cut each caramel into 3 or 4 pieces.
Cutting the caramels smaller will allow them to be better distributed throughout your cake.
If you leave the caramels whole, you will have big chunks of caramel in your cake and they may not melt fully.
Drop the bits of caramel into the cake batter then gently stir to combine.
The caramel bits tend to fall to the bottom of the mug so you will find more and more caramel as you dig down into your mug cake.
Speaking of digging in, you’re going to want to let your mug cake cook for just a few minutes before you start eating it.
The caramel will be like molten lava.
You could probably get away with eating it right away if you add some ice cream on top to cool things down.
We also like to put a little powdered sugar on top of our cake.
I have a little dredge cup that I keep full of powdered sugar in the pantry.
Just shake a little powdered sugar onto your cake and you’re good to go.
Got 5 minutes? It’s time to go make this chocolate cake in a mug that you cook in the microwave. Winner!
