Key to Success #1 – Use Granny Smith Apples
For this Apple Crisp recipe, I prefer to use a nice, tart apple, like Granny Smith.
The pretty, green Granny Smith is perfect in this recipe because it is nice and firm with a tart flavor.
When it comes to baking desserts with apples, Granny Smith apples provide the perfect balance of sweet and tart to make a flavorful treat.
It’s important to find just the right apple variety, as fruit that is too sweet gets mushy and air-fried apples can end up bitter with under-cooked centers.
Granny Smith apples hold their shape during baking, as well as maintain a distinct flavor!

The cinnamon sweetness in this recipe really helps balance out the tart Granny Smith.
If you use a sweeter apple, consider cutting out some of the sugar in this recipe so that the flavors are balanced.
I use an apple slicer to slice and core my apples.
This really makes the job easier and ensures that you get even slices out of your apple.
Then I use a small paring knife to cut each slice into 2-3 pieces each so that they’re bite-sized.

Air Fryer Apple Crisp
Ingredients
For the Crumble
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup old fashioned oats
- ¼ cup light brown sugar
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼ cup butter
For the Apple Filling
- 2-3 Granny Smith apples
- 3 Tbsp butter, melted
- 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ cup light brown sugar
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 pinch salt
Directions
Make the Crumble Topping
- In a small bowl, combine dry ingredients for the crumble topping. Use a fork to press the cold butter into the dry ingredients until the butter is combined. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Make the Apple Filling
- Preheat air fryer to 370 degrees F. Grease four 6-ounce ramekins well.
- Peel and core apples then cut into bite-sized pieces. Place apples in a medium bowl. Add in butter, flour, vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir to combine.
- Divide apple mixture between four ramekins. Sprinkle crumble mixture over the apples.
- Cook in the air fryer at 370 degrees for 15-17 minutes, until apples are softened and crumble is golden brown.
Notes
- Reduce sugar in filling to 2 Tbsp
- Eliminate sauce from filling
- Try whole wheat flour in place of all-purpose flour
