How to Make Honey Sesame Popcorn Chicken
Step 1: Cook the Popcorn Chicken
Air Fryer Method:
Preheat to 400°F. Cook popcorn chicken in a single layer for 15 minutes until hot and crispy.
Oven Method:
Preheat oven to 400°F. Bake on a foil-lined baking sheet for 15–20 minutes according to package directions.
For best results, make sure the chicken is fully crisp before adding sauce.
Step 2: Make the Homemade Sesame Chicken Sauce
In a small bowl, whisk together:
- Ketchup
- Soy sauce
- Honey
- Brown sugar
- Rice vinegar
- Sesame oil
In another small bowl, mix cornstarch and cold water to make a slurry.
In a saucepan over medium-high heat:
- Heat vegetable oil.
- Add minced garlic and sauté about 1 minute until fragrant.
- Reduce heat to medium and pour in sauce mixture.
- Bring to a gentle simmer.
- Whisk in cornstarch slurry.
- Cook 2–3 minutes until thickened.
The sauce should coat the back of a spoon.
Step 3: Toss and Serve
Transfer cooked popcorn chicken to a bowl and slowly stir in the sesame sauce until evenly coated.
You may not need all of the sauce. Use about ¾ and reserve the rest for dipping if desired.
Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and serve immediately.

Why This Sesame Chicken Sauce Uses Ketchup
This isn’t a traditional sesame chicken sauce, but it works beautifully.
Ketchup:
- Adds balanced sweetness
- Creates rich color
- Helps thicken naturally
- Keeps ingredients simple and pantry-friendly
Combined with honey and soy sauce, it gives you that takeout-style flavor without specialty ingredients.
Air Fryer Sesame Chicken Tips for Crispy Results
The air fryer gives the crispiest texture, which helps the sauce cling without making the chicken soggy.
For best texture:
- Cook in a single layer
- Don’t overcrowd the basket
- Toss with sauce just before serving
If baking, make sure the chicken is fully heated and golden before adding the sauce.
How to Thicken Sesame Chicken Sauce
If your sauce isn’t thick enough:
- Let it simmer another minute or two
- Or mix ½ teaspoon cornstarch with 1 teaspoon cold water and whisk it in
The sauce will continue to thicken slightly as it cools.
Make It Spicy (Optional Variation)
If your family prefers a little heat, try adding:
- Red pepper flakes
- Sriracha
- Chili garlic sauce
It balances the sweetness nicely.
What to Serve with Honey Sesame Chicken
This easy honey sesame popcorn chicken pairs well with:
- Fried rice
- Steamed white rice
- Brown rice
- Stir-fried vegetables
- Simple broccoli
It also works great for meal prep lunches.
