Why I Love Sweet Potato Dumplings Made With Crescent Rolls
I adore this recipe because it truly hits the sweet spot between easy and impressive.
It uses simple pantry staples, takes very little hands-on time, and fills the whole house with the most irresistible buttery-cinnamon aroma.
And because everything bakes together in one dish, cleanup feels like a breeze.
This is the kind of dessert that makes me feel like a kitchen magician without ever breaking a sweat!

What Are Sweet Potato Dumplings?
Sweet potato dumplings are a comforting Southern-style dessert made by wrapping tender sweet potato pieces in dough and baking them in a buttery, cinnamon-spiced sauce. As they bake, the dough becomes golden and flaky while the sweet potatoes turn soft and caramelized.
This sweet potato dumplings recipe uses refrigerated crescent rolls to make the process simple and approachable. Instead of making dough from scratch, the crescent rolls bake up perfectly flaky and soak up all that rich, buttery sauce.
The result is a warm, cozy dessert that tastes homemade but comes together with minimal effort.
Ingredients & Substitutions
Here’s what you’ll need to make these warm and gooey dumplings:
- Sweet potato patties (Pictsweet brand)
These give the dumplings their soft, creamy center without needing to cook fresh sweet potatoes from scratch. If you can’t find this brand, you can make your own by slicing fresh sweet potatoes and parboiling them until slightly softened. - Refrigerated crescent roll dough
The buttery layers wrap around each sweet potato slice and bake into a golden, flaky crust. Crescent dough sheets also work—just cut each sheet into squares before rolling. - Butter (melted)
This creates the rich, caramel-like sauce that soaks into the dumplings while they bake. - Light brown sugar
Sweetens the sauce and combines with the butter to make a thick, syrupy glaze that coats every dumpling. - Ground cinnamon
Adds warmth and depth to the sweet potato filling and the buttery topping. - Sprite lemon-lime soda
This might sound unusual, but it helps create that bubbling, sweet sauce as the dumplings bake. 7-Up, Mountain Dew, or another lemon-lime soda can work in a pinch—just avoid diet versions.

How to Make Sweet Potato Dumplings with Crescent Rolls
This dessert comes together so quickly that it’s perfect for last-minute gatherings or weeknight cravings.
Here’s how to make it step by step:

Pro Tips for the Best Sweet Potato Dumplings
Let the patties defrost just slightly—too frozen and they’ll crack the dough, too soft and they’ll fall apart.
Pour the soda around the dumplings not over them to avoid washing off your buttery cinnamon topping.
Place a baking sheet under your pan if you’re worried about bubbly overflow.
For extra caramelization, spoon some of the sauce over the dumplings halfway through baking.
Serving Ideas for Sweet Potato Dumplings
Serve warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream—it melts into the cinnamon-brown-sugar sauce beautifully.
Fresh whipped cream also complements the warm spices perfectly.
These make a fantastic Thanksgiving or Christmas dessert, but they’re easy enough for a weekday treat.

Variations for Sweet Potato Dumplings with Crescent Rolls
Add nuts: Sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts inside the dumplings for texture.
Maple twist: Add a tablespoon of maple syrup to the butter mixture.
Extra spice: Add nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice for more warmth.
Orange zest: Brightens the flavor and pairs beautifully with sweet potato.

Yes! Slice your sweet potatoes and parboil them for about 10 minutes until slightly softened.
You can assemble the dumplings a few hours early, but wait to pour the butter mixture and soda until right before baking.
I don’t recommend it—diet sodas don’t caramelize the same way and may affect the texture and flavor.
Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best results.
Yes! Bake completely, cool, then freeze. Thaw and warm in the oven to revive the sauce.
Most sweet potato dumplings recipes use a buttery brown sugar and cinnamon sauce that bakes into the crescent rolls. As the dumplings cook, the sauce thickens and caramelizes around the sweet potatoes.
Sweet potato dumplings are often considered a Southern-style dessert. They’re similar to apple dumplings but use sweet potatoes for a cozy fall flavor that’s especially popular around Thanksgiving and the holidays.

Easy Sweet Potato Crescent Dumplings
Ingredients
- 1 pkg sweet potato patties, Pictsweet brand
- 2 cans (8 oz each) refrigerated crescent roll dough
- ¾ cup butter, melted
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- ⅔ cup Sprite lemon lime soda
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Allow the sweet potato patties to defrost at room temperature for a few minutes. Slice each one in half.
- Unroll crescent dough. Cut each triangle into two smaller triangles. You will end up with 32 dough triangles from the two packages.
- Place a sweet potato slice on the short side of each triangle and roll up to the point, wrapping dough around each sweet potato slice.
- Arrange crescent-wrapped sweet potatoes in the greased pan.
- In a medium bowl, stir together melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture over sweet potato dumplings.
- Pour the Sprite in the center and along the edges of the pan. (Do not pour directly on the dumplings.)
- Bake uncovered 33-36 minutes until golden brown.
Notes
- In place of Sprite, you can use 7-Up, Mountain Dew, or similar lemon-lime sodas. I do not recommend using diet soda in this recipe.
- Crescent dough sheets can be used in place of crescent roll dough. Cut each sheet of dough into 16 squares and then roll up as directed.
- If you can’t find the sweet potato patties, you can make your own by slicing fresh sweet potatoes and parboiling them for about 10 minutes to slightly soften them.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream.
