I’m not a big kitchen gadget person. I prefer to use my oven and stovetop for as many things as possible; however, I recently went out on a limb and purchased an air fryer.
I think the main point of contention with me and kitchen gadgets is that I just don’t have a lot of room in my kitchen to store them.
It’s such a hassle to have to find a place to keep them and then go dig them out of their hiding spot when I need them.
I want to share with you my recipe for air fryer roasted chicken. This recipe is so easy and so flavorful and cooks in an hour in the air fryer. What could be better than that?

The Air Fryer
I got a Cozyna XL Air Fryer from Amazon and had it shipped to my house with Prime and got it two days later.
I decided on an XL model so that I could cook more than one thing at a time.
I’d read that you could get an accessory kit that would let you cook food in layers, which sounded like a plus.
When I opened the box, the kids commented that it looked like an egg.
Whatever. Call it what you will, but this thing can cook a mean chicken.
The Naked Chicken
Speaking of chicken, did your mother used to hold up the whole raw chicken and make it cluck around and look like it was dancing?
I remember my mom doing this maybe once and then after that, she always declined when I asked to see the dancing naked chicken.
Fast-forward 30 years and I was excited to show Noah how I could make the chicken dance. But he was totally unimpressed.
Perhaps a bit grossed out even. Oh well!
For this recipe, I used a 5-6 pound whole chicken from the grocery store.
Key to Success #1 – The Spices
I wanted to spice things up for this bare chicken so I used a combination of sea salt, black pepper, dry mustard, garlic powder, and smoked paprika with a little Mrs Dash thrown in there for good measure.
You can totally use whatever flavor combination you enjoy. Lemon pepper would be wonderful on this chicken too.
Key to Success #2 – Put Something on That Naked Chicken
I put a little olive oil on my naked chicken then rubbed those good spices into his skin.
Am I making this weird? Okay, go ahead and put the chicken into the air fryer basket breast side down.
Since I have an XL model air fryer, I had plenty of room for my bird.
Cook breast side down for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
I’m guessing all air fryers have a temperature gauge, but if not it would be a medium-high temperature.
After 30 minutes, carefully turn the chicken over and cook for another 30 minutes.
Mike had a great suggestion to use BBQ gloves to turn the chicken over, which I declined but I’m telling you right now that he was right and that would have been a lot easier.
So, if you have BBQ gloves, go ahead and use them to flip your chicken.
After the second 30 minutes with the breast side up, you’ll have a beautifully cooked chicken with a nice, crispy skin.
Be sure to use your meat thermometer to make sure the chicken is at least 165 degrees.

Save this Air Fryer Whole Roasted Chicken to your favorite Air Fryer board or your Chicken Dinners board.
- 1 whole chicken (5-6 pound)
- olive oil
- 2 tsp sea salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp dry mustard
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp Mrs Dash seasoned salt
- Rub chicken with olive oil. Sprinkle seasonings over chicken then pat into skin.
- Place seasoned chicken in air fryer breast side down. Cook 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
- Flip chicken breast side up. Cook additional 30 minutes or until chicken reaches internal temperature of 165 degrees.
Use any seasonings that you prefer.
