Why I Love This Recipe
These easy Halloween cookies use two types of prepared cookie dough to make one delicious cookie.
This is one of those recipes where the sum is greater than the sum of its parts.
You could eat these two cookies separately, but they’re so much better when you combine them.
Everyone will think you slaved all day, these cookies really only take about 15 minutes start to finish!
Ingredients & Substitutions
To make these delicious treats, you’ll need a few key ingredients that each play a vital role in delivering that fantastic flavor and fun presentation:
- Refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough: This is the star of the show! It saves time while ensuring that each cookie is chewy and delicious. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can make your chocolate chip cookie dough from scratch.
- Pillsbury Halloween shape sugar cookie dough: These fun shapes make the cookies festive and perfect for Halloween. Feel free to switch up the designs depending on the season, like using heart shapes for Valentine’s Day, if you desire.

🔑 Key to Success #1 – Choose Your Pillsbury Sugar Cookie Shape
Pillsbury produces sugar cookies in a variety of shapes, including Halloween-themed ones.
You can find them in the refrigerated foods department of your neighborhood supermarket or large box retailer.
The majority of the time, they are pre-sliced, however, occasionally you might buy them in a slice-and-bake roll.
Even though they are little and unimpressive, these cookies taste fantastic on their own.
When you mix in some chocolate chip cookie dough, they get significantly better.
You are free to use whatever cookie shape that you choose. There are many additional alternatives besides the Pumpkin shapes that I used.
They constantly release new designs. This year, I came across some cookies with really cute Monster faces on them!

🔑 Key to Success #2 – Make It Easy With Refrigerated Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
I like to use a roll of refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough for these simple cookies since it is quick and handy.
You have the option of making your own chocolate chip cookie dough or using pre-sliced chocolate chip cookie dough from a package.
The chocolate chip cookie dough roll should be sliced fairly thin.
You should be able to cut a 16-ounce roll of cookie dough into 20 cookies.

How to Evenly Portion Cookie Dough from a Log
Cut the roll in half so each half is 10 cookies.
Then cut each half into half again and then each portion is 5 cookies.
Cut the four quarters into 5 cookies each and you’ll end up with exactly 20 cookies.
It is sensible to cut the chocolate chip cookies into the same number of slices since each package of sugar cookie shapes contains 20 pieces of dough.
If you are using pre-sliced break-apart cookie dough, it’s very important that you press the dough into a thin disc before you put your sugar cookie dough on top.
If you don’t flatten the chocolate chip cookie dough, the sugar cookie dough will likely slide off when your cookies are baking.
On an ungreased cookie sheet, space the chocolate chip cookie dough two inches apart.
I enjoy making cookies on AirBake cookie pans because they bake evenly and are naturally non-stick.

🔑 Key to Success #3 – Center the Stack then Bake ‘Em Up
This simple dish is almost too simple for the third key to success.
All you have to do is stack the small sugar cookie on top of the larger chocolate chip cookie dough before baking your cookies
It really is that easy.
These adorable tiny cookies may be made by anybody who is not a baker.
But there are a few things to bear in mind.
To begin with, there are correct and incorrect ways to arrange the sugar cookies on the baking pan.
The side with the cleanest design is the top.
If the design has any streaking in it, this side should be placed face down.
Second, try your best to evenly center the sugar cookie dough over the chocolate chip cookie dough.
Try to place the sugar cookie in the center for the nicest and cleanest appearance.
However, it doesn’t have to be flawless.
Additionally, you do not need to form the chocolate chip cookie dough into a round.
If it is a little off-square, it will even out when baking.

Serving Suggestions
These double decker cookies make a splendid addition to any Halloween spread!
Serve them alongside other spooky treats like my Batty Brownies or a fun Halloween charcuterie board.
They also make awesome party favors—just package them in cute Halloween-themed bags!
Recipe Variations
Feel free to get creative with this recipe!
Here are a few variations that I love to experiment with:
- Nut Butter Twist: Replace half of the chocolate chip cookie dough with peanut butter cookie dough for a delightful nutty taste.
- Sprinkles Galore: Add festive sprinkles on top of the sugar cookie shapes before baking for extra flair.
