When I first heard of Hot Cocoa Cookies, just the name alone made me want to dive headfirst into kitchen creation. These delectable treats boast everything we love about the classic winter drink—rich, chocolatey goodness with a sweet marshmallow finish. Trust me, after one bite, you’ll find yourself whisked away to a world of cozy memories, wrapped in a warm blanket by the fire.

I find myself making this cookie recipe time and again, not just because they are a hit with friends and family, but because there’s something so comforting about them.
While I create these magical cookies, I often think of other delightful treats, like Chocolate-Dipped S’mores or Frosted York Peppermint Patty Brownies, that are perfect for bringing a little extra joy to cold days.

Why I Love This Recipe
This recipe has a special place in my heart not only because of its comforting flavors but also due to its ease of preparation and versatility.
These cookies can be whipped up quickly, and the combination of melty chocolate chunks and marshmallow bits makes for a crowd-pleaser every single time.
Plus, they hold a dose of nostalgia that warms my soul.

Ingredients & Substitutions
Here’s the lowdown on what makes these cookies extraordinarily delicious.
- Butter: Key for that melt-in-the-mouth texture and a deep, buttery flavor. If you’re looking for a lighter option, consider using margarine or even coconut oil.
- Granulated and Brown Sugar: The duo creates the ideal blend of sweetness and chewiness that makes the cookies so addictively moist. Feel free to explore sugar alternatives as needed.
- Hot Cocoa Mix and Cocoa Powder: These ingredients are what set our cookies apart, adding that characteristic hot cocoa flavor. I prefer the Nestle Milk Chocolate hot cocoa mix, but you can use any high-quality mix that you like. If you’re out of the mix, a DIY version with powdered milk and cocoa powder will do the trick.
- All-Purpose Flour: Essential for providing structure, making sure each cookie holds its shape. For those avoiding gluten, a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend works seamlessly.
- Salt, Baking Soda, and Baking Powder: Essential for balance and lift, ensuring each cookie is perfectly puffed and flavorful.
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chunks and Mallow Bits: These elements take the cookies to an indulgent level, with melty bites of chocolate and a playful marshmallow finish.

- Chill the dough well to prevent spreading and achieve the perfect texture.
- For an extra gooey center, add a sprinkle of sea salt on top before baking—it’ll highlight the chocolate flavors beautifully.

Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely! You can prepare the dough in advance and store it in the refrigerator for up to three days. When you’re ready to bake, let the dough sit at room temperature for a few minutes before forming the cookies.
Regular mini marshmallows will not really work well in this recipe. They will completely melt and run off the cookies before the cookies have a chance to cook through. Dehydrated mini marshmallows are perfect for this recipe though.
No worries! You can make your own by combining cocoa powder, powdered milk, and a bit of sugar. This will provide the same hot cocoa flavor that makes these cookies special.
