What Is 4 Layer Delight?
4 Layer Delight is a classic layered pudding dessert made in a 9×13 pan. It typically includes:
- A buttery shortbread-style crust with chopped pecans
- A sweetened cream cheese layer
- Chocolate pudding
- Whipped topping
You may also hear it called:
- Four Layer Dessert
- Chocolate Delight
- Chocolate Lasagna
- Chocolate Lush
No matter what you call it, the structure is the same and the result is always delicious.

Ingredients for Four Layer Delight
You only need a handful of simple ingredients to make this classic dessert:
- Butter
- All-purpose flour
- Finely chopped pecans
- Cream cheese
- Powdered sugar
- Cool Whip
- Instant chocolate pudding mix
- Milk
That’s it. Nothing fancy. Just dependable ingredients that come together beautifully.

How to Make 4 Layer Delight
Layer 1: The Shortbread Crust
Combine the flour, melted butter, and finely chopped pecans. Press the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch pan.
Bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes. Let the crust cool completely before adding the next layer.
Layer 2: Cream Cheese Layer
Beat together the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and half of the whipped topping until smooth and creamy.
Spread evenly over the cooled crust.
Layer 3: Chocolate Pudding
Whisk the instant chocolate pudding mix with the milk until thickened. Let it chill briefly, then spread over the cream cheese layer.
Layer 4: Whipped Topping
Spread the remaining whipped topping over the pudding layer. Garnish with extra chopped nuts or a light sprinkle of cocoa powder if desired.
Chill for at least 2 hours before serving.

Pro Tips for the Best Four Layer Dessert
- Use real butter, not margarine, for the flakiest crust.
- Make sure the crust is completely cooled before adding the cream cheese layer.
- Let the dessert chill fully before slicing for clean layers.
- Use full-fat cream cheese for the richest flavor.
If you want to lighten it up, you can use lite Cool Whip, low-fat cream cheese, and fat-free milk.

Easy Flavor Variations
One of my favorite things about this 4 Layer Delight recipe is how easy it is to customize.
Try swapping the chocolate pudding for:
- Butterscotch pudding
- Pistachio pudding
- Lemon pudding
- White chocolate pudding
Once you know the basic structure, you can create all kinds of layered dessert variations.

Want to Make Four Layer Delight Even Fancier?
It’s all in the toppings, my friend.
Drizzle it with homemade salted caramel or rich chocolate sauce for that extra wow factor.
Sprinkle on some toasted nuts or chocolate shavings for a crunch that pairs beautifully with the soft layers.
And for those festive occasions, decorate it with fresh berries or a dusting of cocoa powder to make it not just a dessert, but a centerpiece that steals the show.
Enjoy unleashing your creativity and watching your guests’ eyes light up with every bite!
