Valentine Chex Mix Muddy Buddies

Key to Success #1 – Gently Melt the Chocolate Chips

This easy Muddy Buddies recipe starts off by melting chocolate chips with peanut butter, butter, and a little bit of vanilla extract.

Start by microwaving the mixture for 1 minute on HIGH power then stir very well.

If the chocolate is not completely melted, microwave for 15 seconds and then stir again.

Continue microwaving the chocolate mixture in 15-second increments until it is completely smooth.

You should be doing a lot more mixing than microwaving so that you don’t overheat the chocolate.

Overheating the chocolate could cause it to seize up and harden and then it would be difficult to coat the cereal with it.

Of course, every microwave is different but you should only heat until the chocolate is only just barely melted.

After the chocolate mixture is fully melted, pour it over the cereal and stir until the cereal is well-coated.

Stir gently so that the cereal doesn’t get crushed and broken.

Key to Success #2 – Use a Plastic Baggie to Coat the Cereal with Powdered Sugar

After the cereal has been coated in the chocolate mixture, we’re going to cover it in powdered sugar to seal in all the deliciousness.

Here’s the easy way to get the powdered sugar all over the cereal mixture.

Scoop the coated cereal into a large plastic zip-top baggie. I use a jumbo slotted spoon, but any large spoon will work for this task.

Next, sprinkle in the powdered sugar, close the bag, and shake it well.

Keep shaking and turning the bag until all the cereal is covered in powdered sugar.

You can tell when everything is coated when the inside of the bag turns white instead of brown.

Key to Success #3 – Add Candy Last

After the Chex cereal has been coated with chocolate and powdered sugar, pour the mix into a large bowl then pour in about 3/4 of the M&Ms and heart-shaped sprinkles.

Stir the mix gently to combine. All the candies that are stirred in tend to get coated in powdered sugar and they may lose their bright colors.

We’re reserving some of the candy so that we can sprinkle them over the top of the mixture at the very end so that the colors will stay bright and vibrant.

You can certainly stir in all the candy at once if that’s what you prefer. It will still taste the same either way.

I just like to sprinkle fresh M&Ms on the top for a pretty presentation.

The sky is the limit on what type of candy you can add to this easy Muddy Buddies mix.

Choose candy that your Valentine will love and you’ve got yourself the perfect Valentine’s Day snack!
